Event Description

Introduction

In the rapidly evolving field of creative and expressive arts therapies, an integrative application involves combining diverse therapeutic approaches and artistic modalities to create holistic treatment plans tailored to individual needs. The 2025 summit presents the concept of integration in multiple dimensions:

ยท Creative and Expressive Arts Forms: Integrative application involves the use of all the various art formsโ€”such as visual arts, music, dance, drama, intermodal and literary artsโ€”in therapeutic practices. Each creative and expressive arts form brings unique benefits and can be tailored to suit different therapeutic goals.

ยท Disciplines and Techniques: Includes integrating techniques from different disciplines, such as psychology, social work, and education, science, medicine, and the creative and expressive arts, to create comprehensive therapeutic interventions. This multidisciplinary approach allows for a more well-rounded and effective treatment strategy.

ยท Body-Mind-Spirit Integration: A holistic approach to therapy that considers the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit. This dimension emphasizes the importance of addressing all aspects of a person's well-being to achieve overall health and harmony.

ยท Global Collaboration: Encourages mutual learning and collaboration between different cultural perspectives and traditions. This includes East-West-North-South exchanges, where diverse cultural practices and healing traditions can be integrated to enrich the field of creative and expressive arts therapy. Such collaborations foster innovation and inclusivity, allowing for a broader understanding of therapeutic practices.

Event Highlights

  • Day 1 (April 18, 2025)
15:00 - 16:15Piloting online Art Therapy groups in a Rheumatology Department for people living with chronic pain & fibromyalgia
    Session: Presentation (75 min)
Speakers: Dr. Val Huet, Katherine Irving

Chronic pain is becoming a worldwide concern. In this presentation, Dr Irving and Dr Huet will outline what drew them to collaborate on piloting this project and how it evolved over the past four years. Dr Huet will discuss the development of the intervention and how she has integrated working with body maps, psycho-education sections and art making.
    16:15 - 16:30Break
16:30 - 17:45The Discipline of Authentic Movement for Nature Connectedness
    Session: Workshop (75 min)
    Speaker: Helen Payne

This workshop includes a power point presentation and experiential elements. It provides a rationale for how the discipline of authentic movement (Adler, 2002) can be employed to support the development of a deeper connection with Nature and spark the development of an ecological self. This is especially important to consider since eco-anxiety is a growing distress especially in young people. The current climate catastrophe illustrates the separation between humans and the more-than-human world, disregarding our interdependence with the earth, acting unethically, and without thought for the ecological damage ensuing. The argument here, based on phenomenology, is for engaging, through the discipline of authentic movement, a deep connection with Nature through the inner witness in the mover and the inner mover in the witness. The aim is to embrace the ecological self and raise further the collective consciousness to act more responsibly and mindfully in the context of the climate catastrophe.
    19:15 - 19:30Opening
19:30 - 20:45Brain, Body, and Beyond: Examining Evidence-Based Practice with Practice-Based Evidence in Dance/Movement Therapy

Brain, Body, and Beyond: Examining Evidence-Based Practice with Practice-Based Evidence in Dance/Movement Therapy
This workshop will emphasize well-established research across various disciplines that supports the multi-dimensional benefits of dance and dance/movement therapy. Connections between evidence-based research with practice-based evidence will reinforce the therapeutic value of dance/movement therapy in clinical contexts—particularly for children with ASD and individuals with complex trauma— as both a neural exercise and as a portal for emotional exploration, symbolic discovery, and healing.

    Session: Workshop (75 min)
Speakers: Dr. Pengcheng An, Linda Chapman, Liu Jia
19:30 - 20:45Enduring Liminality: Dancing with the trouble through intra-active imagination
    Session: Workshop (75 min)
    Speaker: Dr. Deborah Green

We are living in "disturbing times, mixed up times, troubling and turbid times," according to Donna Haraway (2016). Contemporary psychotherapy and Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) are thus evolving in turbulent liminal ecotones where different theories inter|intra-sect – rubbing the skin off each other as they mutate into ‘A Something’ new and potentially more contextually applicable (See Bayo Akomolafe, Sophie Strand and Tyson Yunkaporta). Within these threshold spaces, we CATs are engaging with an intra-ruption of the Western, positivist, enlightenment, colonial, humanist notion that humans are separate from nature – that humans are agential and nature is inert, dumb matter. Relational ways of being and becoming offer different options (See Karen Barad and Jane Bennett). In this workshop, we story, we play within and - together - we tease apart the possibilities offered in these emerging liminal spaces. We will lay foundations through creative engagement with the more-than-human ‘internally’ and ‘externally’ (please bring creative materials of your choice and a bowl of ice-cubes). We will then explore what has arisen in our creative making by teasing apart some crunchy concepts nested within Positivist Epistemologies and Relational Ontologies (with specific attentiveness to Indigenous animisms, and Post-humanism and New Materialism) so that we may linger in the intra-active imaginal spaces formed when these overlap in our A|R|T|S practices as CAT Artists, Researchers, Therapists and Situated practitioners.
    20:45 - 21:00Break
21:00 - 22:30Global development of Creative and Expressive Arts Therapies

This panel will explore the dynamic and expanding field of creative and expressive arts-based therapies across the world.

    Session: Workshop (75 min)
    Speaker: Dr. Michael Franklin
    10:15 - 10:30Break

    Session: Workshop (75 min)
    Speaker: Dr. Amber Gray

    Speaker: Dr. Fang Man

This online workshop will explore how these methodologies synergize to highlight the dynamic embodiment of the four coping stances identified by Virginia Satir: placating, blaming, super-reasonable, and irrelevant. By utilizing DMT techniques, therapists can guide individuals and families in experiencing these stances not just conceptually, but through movement and expression.
