The International Association of Creative Arts in Education and Therapy (IACAET) extends our deepest concern and sympathy to all peoples involved and affected by the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict in 2023. Our organization is deeply committed to the values of peace, creativity, arts therapy and education as tools for healing and understanding. We are troubled by the continuing human suffering and the impact of this conflict on communities in the region. We call for a peaceful resolution to this enduring conflict, urging all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and diplomacy to ensure a safe coexistence and harmonious future for the people in the area.

IACAET new website to be launched
IACAET is going to launch a new website with a fresh design integrating more functionalities and contents. There is a Member Zone exclusively for IACAET members who can access many exciting contents including the 35+ IACAET webinars (recordings) and other educational resources. The new website will serve our members better to support global collaboration.

A Warm Welcome to Professor Ma as Co-Editor-in-Chief of CAET

We are pleased to announce that Professor Ma Liwen has joined CAET as a co-editor.

Professor Ma is an associate professor at the Institute of Educational Psychology and School Counseling in the Department of Education at Beijing Normal University. She designs and implements graduate professional courses in integrated educational drama, including Drama Therapy and Educational Drama, Counseling for Personality and Social Development, and Crisis Intervention for Elementary and Middle School Students. She also founded and is the director of the Center for Applied Drama and Expressive Arts Education Research in the Department of Education. She is an associate editor of the journal ‘Beijing International Education Review’. She is a pioneer in promoting applied theatre education in China.

Her main research areas are applied theatre, expressive arts education and therapy, mental health and action research, and she has published more than 40 important papers and books in many national and international journals and publishers.

South African Journal of Arts Therapies

We are pleased to share with you the first open-access edition of South African Journal of Arts Therapies.

Please feel free to share this linkwith your network and colleagues, as it will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge in arts therapies.

The articles presented highlight the first group of graduating South African art therapists from the first Art Therapy program on the continent of Africa at the University of Johannesburg, SA.

The journal is a platform for South African voices in the field of Creative Arts Therapy. In partnership with SANATA this journal will serve all the arts therapies, including drama, psychodrama, dance/movement, music and art, with rotating guest editors for differently themed issues.

What follows are ten contributions to South African art therapy scholarship grounded in lived intersectional encounters that stretched the boundaries of research and practice.

Janet Adler: A Beacon in Movement and Mindfulness

In our November issue, we pause to honor the profound impact of Janet Adler (1941-2023), who passed away on July 19, 2023. As the founder of the Discipline of Authentic Movement and the Circles of Four program, Janet's indelible legacy in dance therapy, shaped by icons Marian Chace and Mary Whitehouse, continues to resonate through her enduring teachings, writings, and films.

In her book, “Intimacy in Emptiness,” Janet writes of life's natural progression:

“This is her own natural, timely death just as natural and timely as her birth... I long for a seamless exit from her body when it is time.”

Jens Wazel's documentary, part of his project on the history of conscious dance, beautifully captures Janet's essence and teachings. Set on Galiano Island, this film is a serene reflection of Janet’s profound impact on the world of conscious movement.

RESEARCH COMMITTEE
The IACAET Research Committee is about to resume its work under the co-chairing of Kath Grushka (Australia) and Stephen Clift (UZ).

The first meeting was held on Monday 13th March, when members met to become acquainted with each other and share their research interests. The main business on the agenda was to agree on Terms of Reference for the Committee, and agreeing on operational details.

Any member of IACAET with an interest in research in creative arts in education and therapy is very welcome to join us and contribute to discussion. We are very keen to think about future research-oriented webinars from IACAET, so all ideas are welcome!
