A collaborative paper has recently been written about the filmproject SYMMETRY invited by CAET, a creative arts education and therapy journal. With contributions by physicist & systems theorist Fritjof Capra, professor Cheng Yang, choreographer Jenny Zhou, biomedical scientist Tony Zhou and filmmaker Ruben Van Leer.
The project has reached far interest to China, further and back, strengthening the dialogue between science & art. Capra’s book The Tao of Physics as been an inspiration for writing the film Symmetry, which makes this paper a beautiful conclusion of the work.

“Symmetry is the perfect collision of science and art.” — The Huffington Post
“Symmetry, an upcoming film that fuses opera, choreography, digital art, and physics to tell a deeply existential tale around the basic questions asked by all curious humans.” — VICE
“Symmetry expresses the two sides of our understanding, one rational, the other emotional, and sets the opera in CERN and a Bolivian salt flat to contrast the human-made machines with the vastness of nature.” — Hyperallergic
“In rare occasions the culmination of art and science reveals something about the inner world of matter. Symmetry is one such Gesamtkunstwerk.” — De Volkskrant

We got all the film shots inside the Large Particle Collider, halfway the production now! Introducing the film crew in the photo: dramaturgist Martin Butler, choreographer Lukas Timulak, dancers Shirley Essenboom, Joeri Dubbe, Cesar Fernandes and Celia Amade. VFX supervisor Tom Geraedts, sound Lennert Hunfeld, docu maker Juliette Stevens, writer director Ruben Van Leer, photographer Masha Osipova, production designer Barnaby Monk, DOP Paul Ozgur, 1st AD Kelly Jenkins and focus puller Michael Hobdell. Amongst acclaimed CERN physicists that where willing to star in the film; a true physical effort between the arts and sciences inside CERN…
The film Symmetry won 2 awards at it’s first North-American avant-premiere in San Francisco. Featuring a panel discussion after the screenings with: Ryan Wyatt, California Academy of Sciences; Dr. Donald Goldsmith, scientist/writer; Keri Kukral, ballet dancer and bio-engineer; Ruben Van Leer, filmmaker.
Physicist Fritjof Capra was also present and stood up from the audience to make a statement about the film: “Today we can understand that subatomic particles are not isolated. You see patterns of energy in motion. So dance is the natural art form to convey this. Because there is a dance of subatomic matter. I think the film Symmetry shows this very well.”
The Symmetry film project was presented in the Ridderzaal by Dutch Minister of Culture Jet Bussemaker, at the Evening of Science and Society. Director Ruben van Leer answered questions amidst 260 prominent scientists and other invites. www.avondwenm.nl (photos by Frank van Driel).
We started the international festivals distribution of the Symmetry films, official selections at the BAFTA recognized Aesthetica Film Festival (UK), the San Francisco Dance Film Festival (USA) and the Netherlands Filmfestival (NL).
