From the President

I am very honoured and excited to join IACAET as its President. I hope to share the experience I built over the years in raising the profile of the arts therapies, and to support colleagues who work in countries where these are still relatively undiscovered. Networks such as IACAET make us much stronger! I also feel particularly inspired by IACAET inclusive stance and its promotion of dialogue across countries and cultures.

Dr. Val Huet
President, IACAET

IACAET Executive Board Meeting

  • On Sep.14, IACAET held the first Board Meeting for this year, welcoming its new president and members. Executive members curated the meeting. Tony Zhou opened the meeting encouraging members’ collaboration and engagement. Michal Lev introduced the new president, Val Huet, who shared her vision and current work with chronic pain patients. Val emphasized the challenges of gaining recognition in the field and the importance of learning the language of research.
  • Devika Mehta provided an update on the organizational structure, noting the need for a Membership Committee lead and encouraging recommendations for the Education Committee. She has also been contacting past members for handovers. Michal reiterated the goal of fostering a supportive and connected community.
  • Committee representatives shared updates: Hiba Shalah (PR Committee) encouraged contributions to the newsletter and discussed expanding multilingual content in journal articles. Joanna To (Events Committee) emphasized the need for more webinars starting in October, with a focus on specific regions and time zones.
  • Regional committees also reported: the Europe Committee shared a six-month interdisciplinary plan (Mimma Della Cagnoletta & Seda Guney), while the African (Paul Animbom), North American (Krystal Demaine), South American (Carmen Nogueira), and Aus/NZ (Carole Carter) committees updated on membership expansion, challenges, and ongoing projects. The meeting concluded with a bonding exercise led by Michal to strengthen group connections.

The Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel has launched ARTIS (Art Inspired Science), a groundbreaking program designed to foster curiosity, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration by interweaving science with art. Funded by the Weizmann-Mandel Foundation, The Braginsky Center, and The Feinberg Graduate School, ARTIS offers art-based education to scientists at various career stages. Participants engage in hands-on experientials with diverse art forms, guided by leading Israeli artists, to encourage creative thinking and personal reflection.

The 2024 pilot included ten sessions: an introduction, six master classes and jamming sessions with renowned artists such as music producer Yossi Fine, dancing choreographer Bosmat Nosan, and chef Shalom Simcha Elbert, followed by three reflective processing sessions. Through these classes, scientists gained insights into the creative process, learning to simplify complex ideas using new artistic tools.

Guided by the art-based researcher, Dr. Michal Lev, reflective sessions connected these artistic experiences to individual research, highlighting the powerful synergy between art and science.

IACAET recognizes ARTIS as a model for interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering creativity and resilience, especially in challenging times like recent events in Israel.

Symmetry is a dance-opera film shot inside CERN, the largest experimental particle physics facility in the world. With the cathedral-like majesty of the Large Hadron Collider as his theatre, a modern physicist searches for the smallest primordial particle and discovers love without end. Symmetry Unravelled is the accompanying documentary about the collision of art and science in the world’s largest machine at CERN. Complementing the dance-opera film, a common curiosity at the crux of man’s fascination with the unknown is revealed.
